5/11/2019 · If the shaft freezes from rust, the BCM detects that the detente isn’t working and I-Key System Error displays in the cluster. This usually also makes programming a new key impossible. The fix is generally simple, remove the shift knob and pour some WD40 or Liquid Wrench down the shaft, wait about 15 minutes and then work the shaft up and down to free it.
4/11/2012 · My Leaf has been in the shop for the last 2 days, as the engineers try to figure out what’s causing the I-key system fault. Once I get my car back, I’ll post again, with whatever the results are. The e-mail I got from Nissan support seemed to say that you can drive the car with this fault. But, it certainly had me freaked for a while.
